What is a JET Grant, and what are the benefits to learning institutions and students?
What is the JET Grant Program?
- JET (Jobs & Education for Texans) provides funding to public junior colleges, technical colleges, state colleges, ISDs (public school districts), and charter schools (when partnered with a public college) to buy and install equipment needed for Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.
- The goal is to help schools develop or expand CTE courses/programs that lead to licenses, certificates, or post-secondary degrees for graduates in high-demand occupations.
Here are some of the primary benefits of receiving a JET Grant – and what it can mean for educational institutions and students in Texas.
Benefits for Educational Institutions:
- Offsets startup and expansion costs for CTE programs: Developing or expanding technical and career-oriented programs often requires significant investment (equipment, facilities, tech). JET grants help defray those upfront costs.
- Allows institutions to offer or expand more in-demand programs: With JET support, colleges and schools can launch new CTE courses — for example: nursing, phlebotomy, ultrasound, etc. – that respond to labor market demand.
- Strengthens pathways from high school to workforce via dual-credit or partnerships: For ISDs or charter schools that partner with colleges, JET funds can support dual-credit or CTE courses – giving students a head start toward a career before they graduate high school.
- Supports statewide workforce needs and economic development: By focusing on high-demand occupations and producing a more skilled workforce, JET helps meet employer needs across Texas – which benefits institutions in terms of relevance, enrollment, and community impact.
Benefits for Students & Workforce Readiness
- Access to hands-on training with up-to-date equipment: Because JET funds purchase real, modern equipment (e.g. medical devices, technology) for CTE programs, students get trained on the same kind of equipment used in actual workplaces.
- Preparation for high-demand, good-paying jobs: JET-supported programs target occupations identified as “high-demand” by local businesses — such as nursing, allied healthcare, etc. That means students are more likely to graduate with skills that directly match labor-market needs, improving their employability.
- Shorter paths to employment (certificate, license, or degree): Since JET supports certificate, licensing, or 2-year degree CTE programs (not just traditional 4-year degree programs), students can enter the workforce faster.
- Lower barriers for students in public schools/colleges: Because the JET Grant helps institutions purchase equipment, students attending public junior/technical colleges or ISDs (in partnership) may get access to high-quality CTE training without huge costs passed down to them.
