FAQs:
Mercury-free thermometer? Then what is the silver-colored liquid inside of the thermometer?
The trademarked name of this liquid is Galinstanô. It is a liquid metal or alloy consisting primarily of gallium, indium and tin.
Who created or discovered Galinstan?
Galinstan was developed by a company in Geraberg, Germany called Geratherm GmbH, a company in the business of manufacturing clinical glass thermometers for about 125 years.
How does this thermometer work?
Just like a mercury thermometer. When heat is applied to the thermometer's tip the liquid expands in the inner glass capillary until the maximum temperature of the patient is registered.
Is this product safe and what happens if it breaks?
The Geratherm® was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration with the 510(k) listing number of K960224. The Geratherm's shell and capillary are made of medical grade glass (for sanitary purposes) and, like any glass object, can be broken. Because it is non-toxic, however, clean-up can be done with warm soapy water or other commercial cleansers.
How do I get the Galinstan back down the tube?
Simply with a wrist snapping motion until the Galinstan is well below 98.6°F.
How accurate is the Geratherm thermometer?
Its accuracy is certified by the manufacturer and because it is an analog device it provides a definitive measurement rather than a presumptive measurement which is given by battery-operated digital thermometers. Also, the manufacturer is ISO 9002-certified for the quality assurance programs they maintain for their products.
How much time is required take a patient's temperature?
It will typically require 3 minutes for an oral or rectal temperature and approximately 4 minutes for an axillary temperature.
Is there an oral and rectal version available?
Yes, both are available with a green or a red cap respectively. In addition, a MagnaTherm® version is also available. The MagnaTherm version comes in an optically magnified case which makes the display extremely easy to read.
Cleaning instructions: Can be cleaned in soapy water while most digital thermometers cannot. Wipe clean with cotton ball or gauze sponge saturated with alcohol.
